KEYS TO SAFE DRIVING THIS WINTER

While we certainly have benefited from a mild winter thus far, there are a few things to keep in mind as you keep yourself and your family members safe on the road when winter does decide to rear its ugly head.  Let’s face it, our weather forecasters are less than perfect and frequently we find ourselves in dangerous weather conditions that we all need to be prepared for.  Here is a short list of things to consider before heading out this winter.

Top Ten Tips for Winter Driving:

  1. Always keep at least a half tank of gas in your car, especially when going long distance.
  2. Make sure your car is up to date with oil, brakes, and tire treads and check your exhaust pipe before driving.
  3. Take extra care to accelerate and decelerate slowly, skids can come out of nowhere and gentle pressure helps retain traction.
  4. Check the weather for your starting point and destination.
  5. Black ice is notoriously difficult to see. If the temperature is freezing, slow down.
  6. Make an emergency kit for your car: everything from food and water, glass scraper, flashlights, and medication can make a life or death difference.
  7. Keep a set of gloves and warm outerwear in your car, in case you find yourself stuck in the cold.
  8. Familiarize yourself with your route so you can be less reliant on a GPS in case road conditions change.
  9. Tell friends and family where you’re going, when you’re supposed to get there, and what route you’re taking.
  10. In icy conditions, following distances is recommended to be increased to eight to ten seconds, as per AAA guidelines.
